how much ram do you have?

Hi all,
I asked freedom scientific if 512 mb of ram would be enough, and I got a response saying it would be more than enough, but someone I use to talk to on msn messenger said he believed I needed 1 gb of ram. He said 512 mb of ram would work, but it would be like walking on stones. Well, I started out with windows 95, and ran this computer on 32 mb of ram for years. True, sometimes the computer would sometimes start grinding for a few minutes like it was downloading something, only the grinding was a bit louder, and I'd stop whatever I was doing until the grinding stopped, but then it would stop, and my computing experience would continue. I have windows 98, and have upgraded from 32 mb to 98 mb of ram to accomidate jaws 5. Although they say 512 mb will be more than enough, when I questioned them about why they don't give specifics anymore about how much ram you need, processor speed and drive space, I was told they couldn't be specific because it depended on the operating system and other programs. That's not good, because the ram requirements could be going up with each upgrade, and I wouldn't know it. So, I'm interested in how much ram people have, and I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have 512 mb, and what you do with it, what programs would really need that extra 500 mb. I'm not much of a game person. Well, I do play hangman on here sometimes, just started playing high low last night, but I'm not interested in those shoot em up shoot em down type of games, and I believe they are the ones that are ram intensive. I get different schools of thought on this, some say 512 mb is adequate, a few say go for more, and some say it depends on what you want to do. Well, I'm not much of a multitasker. That's not to say I've never had over one program open besides jaws, but I only do it for a few minutes at a time, and I only have programs I need open to do whatever it is I'm trying to do. I'm not interested in having 5 to 10 programs open at once.

to be honest ww, judging by what you are saying you want to do with your computer 512 meg of ram will be more than enough yes. the more ram you have available to you the better is true, but there is no point in shelling out unnecessary amounts of cash at the same time. go for 512, you'll be fine.

I agree with what you have 512 MB is plenty. I use 1 GB but I do a lot, and have plenty of programs running in the backround. With my company I work for, we build computers for the visually impaired and we recommend 512 to be the lowest.

Thanks guys, Like I said, even though I'm not much of a multitasker, I have had had 3 programs running, for example, I was trying to listen to the training section in the what's new topics, which made it necessary for me to have windows explorer and winamp open at the same time. If you count jaws, I had 3 programs open, and at the time, video graphicsequalizer and playlist windows were open by default. There fore, I had 3 programs open, and 2 child windows, and I couldn't get jaws to focus. Oh yeah, since I was working in internet explorer, I had it open, forgot about that. so I had winamp, windows explorer, internet explorer and jaws all running, plus the graphics equalizer and playlist editor open, which I never use, so unchecked them. I had 4 programs open and 2 child windows open, and jaws just wouldn't focus. so I couldn't use the computer to follow along with the training lessons. I was using jaws6, and jaws 6 is just too sluggish and lacking in energy on this computer, running on 98 mb of ram, 200 mhz processor and around 400 mb of free disc space. Thanks again guys,

well actually ben, this computer started out with 32 mb of ram, and we had it upgraded to 98 mb, that was all it would take. I ran this computer on 32 mb of ram for several years, and someone said he didn't know howI was still using jaws on 32 mb. I found out he ran 10 programs at a time, and I had to laugh at him, because if I ran 10 programs all at once, I don't think I could, but I usually only had jaws and one other program open at the same time. Running all those programs at once with all those windows open just doesn't make much sense to me. Even if I had 3 gb of ram, I just don't have a multifunctional brain that can multitask and talk to several people on several different programs at once. There have been times when I wish I could, like if I'm in a voice chat room, and several people are in to their own thing, and I'm just not in to it. It would be nice if I could talk to someone else in the room on msn messenger who isn't a part of the conversation either. I mean it would be a way to private text chat with them. I can have 2 text chats at once on msn messenger, because of the delay in response, but I can't carry on a text chat and a voice chatat the same time without someone being on hold, and that's just sooo rude.
